A competition has been launched in lower Columbia to awaken young people‘s interest in gardening.
The Value Gardens Poster Contest is open to kids from grade one to grade 12 and requires them to create a poster based on the theme, “Why do people garden?”
According to TDN.com, first place in each category receives $50 while second and third get $25 and $10 respectively.
The competition is being run by the local Master Gardeners and its organisers will be hoping it encourages kids to learn some of the skills that will make them competent in the garden and greenhouse.
As January fades into February, the Oregon Master Gardeners advises that gardeners carry out a list of tasks in the garden and greenhouse.
Although the advice is very much dependant on location, gardeners should look to have their soil tested to establish nutrient needs.
Other February tasks include tuning up the lawn mower and gardening equipment prior to the busy season and repairing winter damage to trees and shrubs.
