A master gardener in North Memphis has revealed her favourite aspects of cultivating crops in her outside space and greenhouse.
Irene Elliott told the Commercial Appeal that she tends to her plants for around four hours a day, starting before sunrise.
She went onto reveal that she has been interested in horticulture for around 40 years, with Vinca being her favourite plant.
In addition to working in her own space, Ms Elliot volunteers in the gardens at her church, at a local halfway house and at the Lewis Center for Senior Citizens in Midtown where she works on its Memorial Rose Garden.
Her most memorable moment came when the mother of a friend passed away.
"When she died, she wanted me to have all her plants. I dug up as much as I could and brought a truck load of plants, many different varieties, back to Memphis," she explained.
In the future, Ms Elliot – who became a Master Gardener in 2010 – said she would like to grow a herb garden.
A Master Gardener and TV personality in Indiana Joe Lamp'l recently wrote in the Evansville Courier & Press that getting the best out of an outside space is all about being proactive.
