Your Perfect Glasshouse
With so many inspirational options, let’s take a look at some of the most important considerations when choosing your perfect Hartley Botanic Glasshouse or Greenhouse.
And remember, we’re always here to help guide you through the process.
What Is Your Ideal Glasshouse Design?
With steep roof pitches, ample growing height, and gorgeous decorative details including finials and cresting, our authentic Victorian range could be exactly what you’re looking for.
Our Modern Horticulture range with clean lines, concealed engineering and large glass panels offer a sleek and stylish growing environment.
Living proof that true style will always outlast fashion, our ever-popular Heritage range is timeless, traditional and wonderfully versatile. Our Heritage range and certain products in our Modern Horticultural range are modular, giving you the option to have whatever pane length suits you best. Flexible, inspirational spaces for all your growing needs.
Or what about a lean-to with additional box-guttering and wall-tops, or with a wall that retains heat for tropical plants and fruit?
From beautiful bespoke Glasshouses of any size, shape or design, to canopies and pergolas, dwarf wall and glass-to-ground, we’ve made them all. We can make yours too.
Which will you choose from our Victorian, Modern, Heritage or Bespoke ranges? All are handmade. All come with a Lifetime Guarantee. All offer everything you could ever wish for.
Dwarf Wall or Glass-To-Ground?
Every gorgeous Hartley Greenhouse is built on solid foundations, be they a concrete strip, a firm well-bedded paving base, or a concrete slab with drainage.
Whether those foundations reach up into a beautiful dwarf wall or a more modern glass-to-ground Glasshouse design, is up to you. A simple matter of your taste and your requirements.
While a dwarf wall offers a sturdy and attractive solid base (of brick, stone, block or concrete) that insulates plants and protects them from colder weather, a glass-to-ground design provides maximum light exposure and a stable temperature day and night to extend your growing season.
What Will You Grow?
You’ll have your favourites of course. From ferns and palms to fruit trees, fresh vegetables and tropical blooms – enjoy them all.
But don’t forget that different types of horticulture require different amounts of space and that it’s often the case that you’ll need more space than you first think.
So be sure to factor that all in.
Where To Site Your Greenhouse?
The aspect and orientation of a Greenhouse is important. Happy, healthy plants thrive on the right light and ventilation, so think about the layout of your garden and where you can put your new Greenhouse that avoids deep shade and slopes.
Glazed from the outside, you’ll need a ‘person-sized’ space on all sides for easy installation and to give it a good clean once in a while. And what about access to water and electricity? Be sure to think about the distance from your home.
Need a Glasshouse That Can Withstand The Elements?
Wherever you are in the world, you’ll want your Glasshouse to be able to withstand the elements. Did you know that our standard range has snow loading capabilities of 20 lbf/ftÇ (20 Pounds Force per Square Foot)?
Or that our meticulous design and precision engineering, as standard, will secure your Glasshouse in wind speeds of up to 125 mph across our Victorian and Modern ranges (56 mph in our Heritage range)?
Tougher still? Not a problem. Whatever the weather and whatever local planning permission and permitting requires, our engineers will design your Greenhouse to be safe and secure. We have always been able to meet these demands in the UK, USA and around the World.
Do You Need Planning Permission and Permitting?
In the UK, if your new Greenhouse is intended solely for domestic use, occupies less than half of your property’s total area, and is below a specified height, it’s unlikely you’ll need planning permission.
Of course, as with any substantial construction project, it’s always wise to visit your local planning and permitting authority online, to carefully check the specific regulations in your area. The last thing you want is a disruption or delay.
Because the sooner you’re sure – the sooner you start to enjoy your wonderful new life, in your new Hartley Greenhouse.
Which Colour?
Some people like to make a feature of their Glasshouse, others want it to complement its surroundings. With a choice of 20 standard colours or your very own custom colour, the choice is yours. And whatever colour you choose, we’ll guarantee your paintwork for 10 years. Looking for something a little different, something simple and authentic? Then how about a Mill Finish? It’s natural and original state. Discover our standard colour range here.
Which Accessories For The Perfect Finishing Touches?
It’s the little things, the finer details, that so often make such a big difference. Think about practical accessories like staging, shelving, coldframes, and louvred vents, along with decorative touches like spandrels and finials. How will you use our exclusive range of Hartley Botanic Greenhouse accessories to personalise your Greenhouse? Discover all our accessories here.
What Utilities Will You Need?
Planning your utilities (essential if you want to include lighting, irrigation, cleaning sinks or even ponds) at the design stage makes it easy to fit the electricity and running water you need to get the very most from your Glasshouse.
Floor Finishing – Tiles, Paving, Pebbles or Earth?
Feel the ground beneath your feet – in whatever way looks and feels right for you. Choose simple soil, a gravel base, paving stones, or even concrete – the decorative flooring and efficient drainage for the way you want to garden.
Seeking The Ideal Tool Storage Solutions?
Everything in its right place – there’s nothing more satisfying. No more clutter, no more fuss, no more frustratingly misplaced tools. And no trips, slips or nasty avoidable tool-related mishaps either.
Use your shelving, staging, and potting shoes to keep your tools secure, out of harm’s way and properly protected from the elements. Even better, why not invest in a Grow & Store Greenhouse? A stylish structure with separate garden storage space, all in one.
Irrigation Options?
Thirsty plants thrive on pure, natural rainwater. And what better way to collect it than with a stylish Hartley Botanic Water Butt?
Heaven sent, abundant, and near pH-neutral rainwater that not only prepares you for the summer months and periods of dry weather, it also saves you money and conserves essential resources.
With a generous 167-litre or slimline 88-litre capacity, the new eco-friendly Hartley Botanic Water Butt makes for an elegant and efficient addition to any Glasshouse – the natural way to keep your plants in perfect health.
